1.
Great is the Lord and great is his love, great is his faithfulness and mercy to us. Lifting our voices, we sing to the one whose love lasts forever and whose grace will always overcome. Praise to the Lord, whose love knows no end, God our redeemer, healer and friend; hope to the hopeless, loving and good, changing our sorrows into joy: his promises are true. Your love reaches up to the heavens, your grace and your truth are forever. Your justice is strong, and your faithfulness endures. Your love reaches up to the heavens. Praise to the Lord, the fountain of life, bringer of blessing, giver of light. Love like no other is ours to receive; God has revealed himself to us, and love is what we see. God unchanging, love never failing.
2.
If I speak words of wisdom, inspired from above, if I fathom the mysteries of life, and my faith moves a mountain, but I don’t have love, I’m as dead as a river run dry. So I will remain in the love of my Lord and cling like a branch to the vine. I’ll walk in his footsteps and live by his word, and I will remain, I will remain in his love. I could give all I have to the needy and poor, I could suffer for every good cause, yet, if my life is loveless, then I’ve fallen short of the fruitfulness God made me for. So I’ll look to the Saviour and follow his lead, every day, as I lay down my life. And I’ll love in response to the love I’ve received, bearing fruit to the glory of Christ.
3.
When my soul is weak and my heart condemned by the burden of all my sin, I will fix my eyes on the sinners’ friend who is calling me to him, who is calling me to him, For he came in flesh and he died in shame crushing sin with his sacrifice; and I died with him, so I’ll rise again, as the Spirit gives me life, as the Spirit gives me life. O you heights above and you world below, with your danger, drought and sword, you shall never take me from my God or the love of Christ of my Lord. So I shall not fear, for his love is strong and in him I am justified; he will hold me close through the ages long, as he reigns at God’s right side, as he reigns at God’s right side. Nothing shall separate us from his love. Nothing shall separate us from his love.
4.
No greater love has ever been known to us, no deeper grace could ever be shown to us; God our creator sent us a saviour who suffered and died, laid down his life: wonderful love. No greater price has ever been paid for us, this sacrifice, offered in place of us; Jesus, the Son of Man, nails through his human hands, paid with his blood to bring us to God: wonderful love. Wonderful love, beautiful love, wonderful love poured out for us. One day we’ll see the glorious face of love, kneel as his feet and thank him for saving us; this is our destiny, to praise him eternally, our light and our life, the presence of Christ: wonderful love.

about

A collection of congregational worship songs on the theme of God's love.

We really wanted this recording to sound like church, rather than the studio. We wanted you to hear the songs how they might sound when you do them at your church. But, with limited talent and budgets, we had to fake it a bit. So we got most of the songwriters together, formed a band, pulled in a friend or two and recorded the core instruments together, live in Joel's house. We thought a bit about arrangements, but the key instruction was 'play it like you would in church'.

After recording the core band we did a bit of tidying up and overdubbing - acoustic guitars, for example, are tricky to do live, and Matt, for all his talent, can't play bass and flugelhorn at the same time - and then asked the delegates at the Resound Worship Songwriting Retreat 2018 to form a 'live' congregation for us. They were great. It was so much fun!

Finally, the singers recorded the lead vocals with the band and the congregation in their ears, to try to emulate the feel of a live situation.

As with Songs for Sundays, we decided to leave the bare lead vocal along with the 'gang vocals' rather than add harmonies, just to make it more like a typical church sound. We mixed it to sound 'not too perfect' and a bit organic.

And here you have it. We hope you enjoy it and, more importantly, we hope these songs help you to worship God together.
