I love the profound poetry of the Nicene Creed, and I love the sense that we’re joining with centuries of Christian witness when we say it together, so when Resound asked for submissions for Songs for Sundays I decided to have a go at a paraphrase. The verses and pre-choruses came together fairly quickly and follow the text of the Nicene Creed as closely as possible (although I’m very conscious of all the vital truths I had to leave out!).

After several attempts and lots of input from other Resound writers, we settled on a chorus that affirms the centrality of what we’re singing to the life and faith of the Church. The key word ‘unshakeable’ in the chorus brings to mind the “unshakeable kingdom” of Hebrews 12, and the song carries the same tone of overcoming faith as that whole chapter.

This song can be used in many places in a service - from opening in unity, to preparing for a sermon, to closing with a affirmation of our faith.

Scriptures: Hebrews 12, 1 Cor 8:6, John 1, Colossians 1, Genesis 1, Ephesians 4: 1-10, 1 Peter 4:5 (and so, so many others!)
